My name is Erika, and I am a beauty product fanatic. Pampering myself with varying beauty rituals at home (like homemade face masks, ombre nails, and the like) is absolutely one of my favorite ways to have a little “me” time, so when Walmart offered me the chance to review the anti-aging Illumask phototherapy mask I jumped at the opportunity.
You may think that you have never heard of light therapy, or phototherapy, but you most likely have. Sunlight has long been known to be a cure for many things, including eczema and psoriasis, as well as help to treat many mood disorders. However, we all also know that the sun contains harmful as well as helpful rays, so with the good comes the risk of things like cancer. That is why phototherapy like that used in the illuMask is created from LEDs and is 100% UV free – meaning the rays that cause damage to your skin are not present. Still not convinced? Non-UV phototherapy has been used for over 30 years in hospitals to treat newborns who are diagnosed with jaundice.
Ok, so let’s get real. The IlluMask kinda looks a little bit like the first Iron Man prototype. I showed my husband when it first arrived and his exact words were “what in the world are you doing to yourself”? I explained that it was phototherapy and he simply lifted an eyebrow before wandering off. Smart man.
Aside from my screen test for Iron Man 4 – here’s the skinny on the anti-aging version of the IlluMask–according to their website:
Our revolutionary LED anti-aging phototherapy mask uses red and infrared light to fight the signs of aging. With the regular use of the illuMask Anti-Aging Phototherapy skin care device you can expect:
- younger looking skin
- visibly brighter, clearer, smoother, more radiant skin
- reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- improved appearance of skin tone and texture
- firmer, more elastic skin
Every evening before bed I would wash my face with my usual cleanser and then I would lie down in bed with my headphones on and listen to music or a meditation. It was actually very soothing and I fell asleep more than once (but it’s ok because the mask automatically shuts off after 15 minutes). If I didn’t wake up to a snoring husband next to me and a dark room, I would then take the mask off, get out of bed, and put on my moisturizer.
After about 2 weeks I noticed that I had some slight breakouts on my face, which is pretty unusual for me. I cannot say for sure if it was due to the mask, but being that I had to work on-camera a week later I discontinued use of the mask until I was done with that job, then resumed use. The recommended use of the mask involves using it for 30 consecutive days, so while I did see results, it is impossible to know if they would have been even better had I been able to use the mask for 30 days in a row.
I had taken before and after pictures to share with you but while I did see a difference, I found it difficult to see in a side by side photo. However I can tell you that my skin feels better–it is smoother and when I apply my liquid foundation it goes on perfectly – almost as if I’m not wearing makeup. Also, my skin is almost glowing–I feel like my skin looks much brighter which has made me feel much more confident without makeup on.
Don’t just take my word for it, either – when I went to link to the product in this post I started reading the reviews of other women who have used the illuMask on Walmart.com – check out the amazing reviews. Interested to try out the IlluMask yourself? You can choose from either the Anti-Aging Mask which I tried, or the Anti-Acne Mask – both of which retail for $29.97 at Walmart.com.
