Perfect for Breakfast: Power Up Punch (Recipe)

3 Comments 23 January 2013

While there is never a good time for cold and flu season, at the very least it coincides with the citrus harvest – which is a natural way to help boost your immune system. Living in California at this time of year means you can’t help but discover different types of citrus – up until a year ago I swear I thought the only different variations of citrus fruit were navel oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes, and grapefruit.

Naturally when Walmart came to the Walmart moms and offered us the opportunity to create a recipe using some of the different types of citrus currently available in stores I jumped at the chance. I decided to make something I like to call “Power Up Punch” – which is loaded with antioxidants, vitamin c, folate, vitamin a, potassium, and fiber – plus it tastes amazing.

I went to my local Walmart and was amazed at the sheer selection. I chose to go with 4 different types of citrus for my Power Up Punch – here’s what I chose:

Moro Blood Oranges: Blood oranges contain anthocyanins, the same red flavonoid pigments that give blueberries their intense color and amazing antioxidant properties. Blood oranges are the only citrus fruit to contain anthocyanins – considered by many to be a “Super Antioxidant”.

Red Pummelo: A cross between a grapefruit and an orange, the red pummelo is a great source of vitamin C, fiber, and potassium.

Cara Cara Oranges: A pinkish orange citrus fruit that tastes a bit like an orange with a dash of spice, the Cara Cara orange is a great source of folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, and fiber.

Minneola: A cross between a grapefruit and a tangerine, the minneola is juicy and sweet, and provides you with lots of vitamin C, fiber, and potassium.

1 Minneola

1/2 of a Red Pummelo

1/2 cup of sugar or sweetner

1 cup of milk

1/2 cup of ice

Directions:

1. Peel 2 blood oranges, 1 minneola, 1 cara cara orange and scoop out 1/2 of the Red Pummelo. Place all pieces in the blender.

2) Turn on the blender to the highest setting until all of the citrus are blended together into one liquid. If you don’t like juice with pulp in it, at this point you’ll want to strain the mixture. If you don’t mind pulp (it’s good for you) continue on to step 3.

3) Add in milk, sugar, vanilla, and ice. Blend well.

Enjoy!
