Stick Or Treat! Pumpkin Decorating with Duck Brand Duct Tape

3 Comments 15 October 2012

When you think of decorating pumpkins for Halloween, I bet most of you think of carving. Maybe some of you think of painting, but I’m guessing that 99% of you DON’T think of Duct Tape. But Duck Brand duct tape is setting out to change your view of Halloween – and pumpkin decorating, with their Stick Or Treat competition.

The Walmart moms decided to get in on the fun by each creating our own Duck Tape Brand duct taped pumpkins. My son has been on a Ninja kick lately, so he requested a Ninja pumpkin this year. What better way to create a ninja than with black Duck tape? Instead of making the eyes out of duck tape, we decided to carve them so that they would glow when lit from inside. Here are the materials that we used:

I drew the pattern freehand onto the pumpkin with one of the kids’ washable markers. Then, we used the tools to surface-carve the eyes before starting in on the duck tape. Here’s what it looked like post-eye carving, pre duck tape:

This part was the best part of all – the kids loved ripping off big strips of Duck Tape to create the ninja. The hardest part was getting the tape to sit smoothly without bubbles. Sometimes we had to lift and reapply the tape, or place another strip of tape over it – but overall I think it came out looking Ninja-licious. Don’t you?

This is a wonderful safer way to celebrate Halloween with pumpkins. We often get Indian summer here in Ohio with warmer than should be October days. Warmer days means rotting carved pumpkins. The Duck tape also is a safe alternative to handing a 7 or 8 year old a knife and saying carve away. Yet another great use for Duck tape.
