Holiday Baking: Christmas Cookies with Kids

3 Comments 12 November 2010

I absolutely love the Holiday season, but one of my biggest challenges is being able to get my 3 year old involved in some of the fun Holiday projects that I love. I’ve already shown you some fun ways to involve your kids with Halloween, but today I want to share my favorite way to get your kids involved in all of the Holiday Baking that you’re planning on doing!

Sugar cookie cutouts are one of the most loved and simple Christmas Cookie recipes out there, and one of the easiest recipes to get kids involved in. After you have made the dough and have refrigerated it, let your kids get involved in rolling out the dough with a rolling pin, cutting out the shapes with cookie cutters, and finally, putting the icing and sprinkles on the cookies themselves.

Here is the recipe for the most delicious and simple sugar cookies that you will ever eat.

Sugar Cookie Cutouts

2/3 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk
1 tsp McCormick’s vanilla
2 cups flour

Beat the butter and sugar till creamed. add baking powder and salt – mix until combined.
Beat in egg, milk and vanilla until combined. Beat in flour (but do not over-mix – the dough will get tough!)
Divide dough in half and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill dough for 30 min.

On a lightly floured surface roll out half the dough to 1/8 inch thick and cut out with cookie cutters.
Repeat with the other half.

Bake at 375 for 7 to 8 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned.
Frost and decorate!

Audrey Grace had a blast cutting out the shapes with the cookie cutters, and putting the sprinkles on top after we put the icing on each cookie (which was a lot messier than I originally anticipated). After we put the finishing touches on each cookie, we loaded them into a gift tin that we bought at Walmart for $2 in between layers of festive tissue paper to create the perfect gift for under $5 – great for co-workers, family members, and friends. Check out the video that we made of our experience below and be sure and share your family baking traditions in the comments!
